In the ever evolving military tech domain seemingly almost all things could be sold if the label ‘spec ops’ is used.
And Ghost Robotics (something of a Boston Dynamics on steroids) just did that: they are offering an autonomous robot equipped with a gun+optics cupola. And what’s the agenda? Well, this is:
“Keeping our [special ops] teams armed with the latest lethality innovation“
The autonomous ground vehicle (because it is that) is equipped with yet another sexy feature, which is a 6.5mm Creedmoor gun. This calibre is getting trendy, as the USA is moving towards adopting and eventually replacing 5.56mm ammo. Of course there is not much new under the Sun, as the Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor is closely resembling the Japanese cartridges of the early 1900s.
The 6.5 gun is called the Special Purpose Unmanned Rifle or SPUR for short. This is all the more important as there is simply no weapons system ever been fielded in the USA lacking a forcefully sounding acronym.
The platform, which is another dog and/or pony model is called the “Ghost Robotics Vision-60 quadruped“.
And the reason to field this autonomous and lethal robot? Fighting wars without casualties. What the gun is for then? Well, not without casualties as such, only without casualties of our own. Which pretty much opens the era of killer robots.
